Academic Impacts of Concussions for Students at Issue in House of Representatives

Washington, DC (Vocus) May 21, 2010

An internationally recognized expert from Children’s National Medical Center testified before the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee of the United States House of Representatives today about the impact of concussions on academic performance. Gerard Gioia, PhD, directs the Safe Concussion Outcome and Recovery and Education (SCORE) Program at Children’s National and has been instrumental in developing the CDC’s materials on safe concussion management in children.

Dr. Gioia’s testimony notes a recent study at Children’s National that found that more than 80 percent of children with concussions reported a significant worsening of symptoms over the first four weeks as they attempted to return to normal school/learning activities. Half of this group continued to experience the cognitive exertional effects 6 weeks post-injury.

“Adolescent brains are still developing, so it’s critical that proper healing take place before a child returns to normal activity,” said Dr. Gioia. “In addition to keeping a student athlete off the field, it’s important to limit cognitive activities — like school work — to allow the brain time to heal and prevent long-term damage.”

Sometimes, the cognitive demands of school while the brain is in an impaired state can increase post-concussion symptoms. It is likely that if the brain continues to over-exert in this way during recovery, the length of recovery time will be delayed.

Dr. Gioia’s clinical work also underscores the need to ensure that schools are adequately prepared with the necessary knowledge and skills to properly support students when they return to school following a concussion. In collaboration with Dr. Gioia and others, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed a series of toolkits to help schools, coaches, and parents understand the needs of children and teens with concussions and appropriately respond.

Children’s Book Author Announces Special Program to Support Groups that Help Children Learn about China

Children’s Book Author Announces Special Program to Support Groups that Help Children Learn about China

Quebec, Canada (PRWEB) March 14, 2006

Author of children’s book about China, “A Musical Journey: From the Great Wall of China to the Water Towns of Jiangnan” announces Special Program for Children’s Groups to support their activities in helping children in North America and other countries learn about China and Chinese culture.

Liow Kah Joon, author of the children’s book about China, “A Musical Journey: From the Great Wall of China to the Water Towns of Jiangnan” announces a Special Program for Children’s Groups to support their activities in helping children in North America and other countries learn about China and Chinese culture.

“If you belong to an association, school or group, no matter how big or small, and your activities include helping children learn about Chinese culture, contact me. I have a Special Program for Children’s Groups to support your activities.”

Since A Musical Journey was launched end 2004, more than 1,000 books have been donated to or used as fundraisers by children’s charities and hospitals, Chinese cultural centers and Families with adopted Chinese children groups in the United States, Canada, Australia and Ireland.

“A Musical Journey: From the Great Wall of China to the Water Towns of Jiangnan” by Liow Kah Joon takes children and on an adventure across 12 regions of China. This English language children’s book allows readers to understand China’s diverse land, people and way of life from ancient times to today. It brings together interesting facts, vibrant illustrations and refreshing music for a fun and educational experience.

Nanci Carlson of Families with adopted Chinese Children (FCC) in Arizona, USA, who has used A Musical Journey in their enrichment programs said:

“The All About China program has gone well and has regenerated interest in belonging to FCC in families with older kids who thought our activities were geared toward little kids. We also have a monthly Friendship Club for kids 6 & over and a newsletter for kids.”

Nena Constant, Elementary School Teacher at College Prep International, Québec, Canada said:

“I have experienced great enthusiasm from my students when doing my lessons with A Musical Journey. I found every page of this book easy to turn into a lesson. There is text, there is music – everything a teacher needs. The students have visual support, something to read to keep them focused and the music to listen to, to enjoy. This book brings together the imagination and the sensibility of the child.”

As to why he decided to write A Musical Journey, Kah Joon said:

“Many Chinese children in North America and other Western countries grow up knowing little about their cultural heritage. Their parents are faced with the difficult challenge of passing on Chinese culture to them in a non-Chinese environment.

At the same time, there are few children’s books available to teachers that give a simple and interesting overview of China’s history, land and people they can use in class.

That’s why I wrote A Musical Journey.”

Campaign for Children?s Receives $5 Million Donation from The Lincy Foundation

Campaign for Children’s Receives $ 5 Million Donation from The Lincy Foundation

Madera, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) February 09, 2011

Children’s Hospital Central California has received a $ 5 million gift from The Lincy Foundation, a charitable organization founded by prominent businessman and philanthropist Kirk Kerkorian, a Central Valley native. This is the largest, single gift in the hospital’s history.

The donation supports the hospital’s ongoing implementation of an Advanced Clinical Systems (ACS) technology infrastructure. This new technological environment will improve the delivery of safe, appropriate and effective care to patients and their families while addressing the needs of referring physicians. Achieved by leveraging an integrated, centrally accessible electronic records system, the ACS will enhance quality, patient safety and clinical outcomes.

“The new, technological environment will allow us to streamline and coordinate care, delivering instant patient data to our doctors and nurses as they make treatment decisions,” said Todd Suntrapak, Children’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

In addition to the ACS program, Children’s will use funds from the donation to explore a physicians’ fellowship program and increase its research infrastructure.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with Children’s Hospital as they enhance their position as the leading pediatric healthcare provider in the region and throughout the Western United States,” said Anthony Mandekic, chairman of the board for The Lincy Foundation. “Mr. Kerkorian holds a special place in his heart for the Armenian community of Central California and the region as a whole. We’re proud to support an organization that provides exceptional levels of care to all children, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.”

The Lincy Foundation was formed in 1989 by Kirk Kerkorian — a Fresno native well known for his business activities in Las Vegas and the Hollywood film industry. The original purpose of the foundation was to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Spitak, Armenia. Since its inception, The Lincy Foundation has provided financial gifts to the humanitarian efforts of numerous U.S. charities while continuing to provide support for Armenia. Funding of The Lincy Foundation is provided solely by Kerkorian’s company, Tracinda Corporation. Both Tracinda and The Lincy Foundation are named for Kerkorian’s daughters, Tracy and Linda.

David Nalchajian, Vice Chairman of the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, was instrumental in bringing the leadership at The Lincy Foundation and Children’s Hospital together.

“We are truly honored that Mr. Kerkorian and the Board of Directors at The Lincy Foundation are connected to our region,” said Nalchajian. “While that connection stems from deep rooted relationships within the Armenian community, the impact of The Lincy Foundation gift will reach all children served by the hospital. I am grateful Mr. Kerkorian’s philanthropic vision so perfectly meshes with the exceptional care provided by Children’s Hospital’s doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers. The Lincy Foundation has always extended their generosity and compassion where most needed. We are blessed to have their support.”

The gift from The Lincy Foundation comes in the midst of the $ 42 million “Campaign for Children’s” initiative that has raised $ 37.2 million to date. The campaign supports the construction of the Paramount Farms Plaza, the Children’s Fund — an indispensable pool of resources that help meet day-to-day and capital needs and the Endowment for Excellence, the Willson Heart Center Endowment and The Guilds of Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Endowment.

“There is no such thing as a child we shouldn’t care for, whether they are ours, our neighbor’s or from across the Valley. This tremendous gift from The Lincy Foundation is a testament to our hospital’s quality of care and the importance of maintaining a strong and vital hospital for our kids,” said Bill Smittcamp, who co-chairs the campaign with his wife Linda.

“This transformational gift will help our pediatric specialty physicians, nurses and staff maintain and improve our unique services,” said Children’s president and chief executive officer Gordon Alexander, Jr., M.D. “Most importantly, it gives us advanced tools to better care for every family’s most cherished treasures — their children.”
